Whether you are a movie fan or not, I am pretty sure you know who is Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp. At the minimum, you must have heard of their names, somewhere, somehow. They are the A-list Hollywood Stars that have made some incredible blockbuster movies.

To test your movie-intelligence, can you identify the movie titles and the characters they are playing in each movie? Try to figure it out yourself first before scrolling down for the answers.

Pacific Rim - Fantastic Trailer and Movie Poster

Fancy sci-fi movie with giant monster (think about Godzilla) and giant robot (think about transformers)? Your wish will be granted soon (you just have to wait for another 7 more months). In July 2013, Pacific Rim, the highly anticipated sci-fi by Guillermo del Toro will be released internationally. Guillermo del Toro last brought us an visual treats in fantasy-drama, Pan's Labyrinth (2006).

Pacific Rim carries no A-lists casts as the main characters are the monsters and the robots. Short synopsis of Pacific Rim (source: GeekTyrant):

"When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.

On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse."

My Movie Review [4.5/5] - The Hobbit : An Unexpected Journey

the hobbit an unexpected journey
Well, where should I start? Maybe let's start with a few self-questioning:

Q1: Is The Hobbit Better than The Lord Of The Rings?
A1: Not better but almost at the same level

Q2: Is The Hobbit an instant classic?
Q2: Come very close

Q3: Is The Hobbit Entertaining and worth the premium for 3D experience?
Q3: Of course, YES!

I just came back from the premiere (Singapore) of The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey [3D], the 2 hours and 40 minutes are well spent and I enjoyed the movie a lot especially with the super sharp and fine images (I can't ascertain whether the cinema that I've been to is showing the 48 fps [frame per second] format, which by the way is 2 times the normal screening) but the clarity and majestic view just blown me away.

I especially like the hobbit character of Bilbo, (by Martin Freeman), he evolved from a reluctant and least expected addition to a life and death quest to a hero at the end of the show. The Hobbit is about his journey and in this installment, he is surrounded by 13 joyous dwarfs who determined to claimed back their kingdom.

Amazing Man Of Steel Second Trailer (Jun 2013)

man of steelIt is still 6 more months to go but it seems that the Man Of Steel is one hell of superhero reboot to die for. A few months back, the Man Of Steel releases its first international trailer teaser (which seems to be darker and just alright to me). Yesterday, Warner Bros released the second international trailer of Man Of Steel which is SUPER AWESOME!

It looks like another awesome superhero franchise reboot (after Batman and Spiderman)! Henry Cavill (last seen in The Cold Light Of Day with Bruce Willis, which is not an impressive movie) is the new superman. Direct by Zack Snyder (from the Watchmen and 300 fame) and produced by Christopher Nolan, the great director whom brought us the latest Batman Trilogy and Inception. I suspect that it will be a darker and more personal superman reboot.

Man Of Steel will be released in June 2013 in 3D and IMAX. Can't wait to see it.

Weekly Box Office Movies in US (Ending 2012/12/09)

skyfall
Here are the TOP 5 Movies from US for the week ending 9th December 2012 (Sun).

SPECIAL NOTE : This week, the top 5 movies remain the same, the only difference is the their positioning. What comes as a surprise is Skyfall (the 23rd James Bond movie), came back to top place on its 5th week! It is already the best Bond movie in the history, the question is how far will it goes?

One of the disappointment for this week's new release is Playing For Keeps (by Gerard Butler and Jessica Biel) which opened at sixth place with mere $5.75 millions.

Latest Trailer - After Earth [IMAX] (Jun 2013)

after earth, will smithWarning : This is not a 3D movie (as per the confirmed report) but it will be released in IMAX. I need to share it here as the trailer looks really cool and oh, Will Smith and his real son Jaden Smith is in it too (after their first team-up in The Pursuit Of Happyness).
After Earth is a Sci-fi directed by M. Night Shyamalan (still remember the Sixth Sense?), it has been long since his last true blockbuster movie and hope this upcoming movie managed to redeem himself!
Short synopsis of After Earth (source: imdb.com):
One thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity's escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind's new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai. When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai's craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

Now enjoy the great trailer...

The Croods - Latest Trailers (Mar 2013)

It's OK that you don't know the meaning of The Croods (me neither!). The important thing to know is that this is a upcoming animation from Dreamworks. Jointly directed by Chris Sanders (from the Lilo And Stitch fame) and Kirk De Micco (Space Chimps).

Voiced by the Hollywood heavyweights like Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds and Emma Stone. It will be released in Mar 2013 in IMAX 3D. The special effects looks stunning and appealing.

Short synopsis of The Croods (source: imdb.com):

The Croods is a prehistoric comedy adventure that follows the world's first family as they embark on a journey of a lifetime when the cave that has always shielded them from danger is destroyed. Traveling across a spectacular landscape, the Croods discover an incredible new world filled with fantastic creatures -- and their outlook is changed forever.

Now, enjoy the 2 trailers released recently!

Oblivion - Trailer and Poster (Apr 2013)

oblivion, tom cruise
Oblivion, the upcoming Sc-fi by Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman has finally released its first Movie Poster and Trailer. Directed by Joseph Kosinski (the one brought us TRON-Legacy), it looks set to be another blockbuster in the making.

Short synopsis of the Oblivion (source: imdb.com) :

"A court martial sends a veteran soldier to a distant planet, where he has to destroy the remains of an alien race. The arrival of an unexpected traveller causes him to question what he knows about the planet, his mission, and himself."

Now, enjoy the trailer:

Weekly Box Office Movies in Singapore And Malaysia (Ending 2012/12/02)

life of pi movie, lee ang
Here are the TOP 5 Movies of Singapore and Malaysia for the week ending 2nd Dec 2012 (Sun).

SPECIAL NOTE : Consistent box offices across the Singapore and Malaysia markets i.e. the new releases, Life Of Pi (from the famous director Ang Lee) tops the chart. It seems that this visual treats is more well received in Asia as compared to USA. As for the other new release in Singapore, Alex Cross (adaptation from James Patterson's novel, Cross),  it manages to climb to the fifth place only.

Have you watched Life Of Pi? Do you enjoy this Special Effect extravagance? Share you view in the comment section.

Awesome Posters From Man Of Steel And Star Trek - Into Darkness

man of steelWe are already in the last month of 2012, while there are a few more blockbusters to handle this month, particularly The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey, Les Miserables and Cirque Du Soleil, it is also time for us to look forwards to 2013 for many blockbusters to come.
Today, I am going to share two recently released awesome posters from the upcoming 3D movies : Star Trek - Into Darkness and Man Of Steel. The former is a sequel directed by J. J. Abrams (stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, ZoeSaldana, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Peter Weller and Alice Eve.) Whereas Man Of Steel is a reboot of the popular super hero franchise of Superman, it was directed by Zack Snyder (stars Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe and Amy Adams).

Weekly Box Office Movies in US (Ending 2012/12/02)

the twilight saga breaking dawn part 2
Here are the TOP 5 Movies from US for the week ending 2nd December 2012 (Sun).

SPECIAL NOTE : This week, there is no change to the top 2 movies i.e. The Twilight Saga : Breaking Dawn (Part 2) still top the chart (for the third week)  Skyfall remain at second spot. Rise Of The Guardians rises to the third spot (from previous week's fourth position), Lincoln and Life Of Pi took the balance seats.

One of the disappointment of this week's new release is Killing Them Softly (by Brad Pitt) which opened at seventh place with mere $6.81 millions. Has Brad Pitt lost his steam? Have you watched it? What is your view of the show?

Stunning Visual Treats From Oz: The Great And Powerful

oz the great and powerful
Sam Raimi, one of the greatest director whom brought us The Spiderman Trilogy, going to give us yet another visual treat in the forthcoming fantasy adaptation, Oz - The Great And Powerful. James Franco, one of my favourite actor of the time, team up with Sam Raimi once again (after the Spiderman Trilogy), he reprises the titular character, Oz.

The movie will be released only in Mar 2013 but Disney has released a series of visually stunning movie posters, movie stills and trailers. I am pretty sure you will be wow-ed by them.

Enjoy...

Awesomeness From Pacific Rim Viral Campaign [Jul 2013]

pacific rim
Looking for a Sci-fi movie with giant monsters vs giant robots? Just think about the mash-up between Godzilla and Transformers, got the picture? If this is the kind of movie you are looking for, then the forthcoming Pacific Rim will be your cup of tea.

Recently, Warner Bros has released their new viral campaign and it seems like it is a success since it has created enough hype but yet doesn't disclose too much as yet. Pacific Rim will only be released in Jul 2013 (12th July 2013, to be exact) and thus I am sure there will be a series of subsequent promotional viral campaigns in the pipeline. I am looking forward for more. Oh, by the way, the movie was originally scheduled to be released this year (in 2D only) but was subsequently changed their direction and re-mastered it for a 3D release in 2013.

Life Of Pi (Nov 2012)

life of pi, 3d movie, lee ang
Li Of Pi, touted to be the next Avatar, because of its extravagant 3D special effect (by TIME). Directed by Lee Ang (famous director from Taiwan that brought us Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon [2000], Hulk [2003], Broke Back Mountain [2005], Lust, Caution [2007] and the more recent one Taking Woodstock [2009]).

Adapted from Yann Martel's famous fantasy adventure novel with the same name (first published in Sep 2001). Life Of Pi is a true visual treats that all fantasy fans will love to love! As quoted by the director, Ang Lee, the most challenging tasks for any director is to deal with water and animal. In this case, he need to deal with both (a real and computer graphic Bengal Tiger as well as lots of water).

The story about how a young boy called Pi and a Bengal Tiger survived a ship disaster might seems less than impressive, but the special effects and the spiritual content are more than enough to satisfy audience from all ages.

The two new releases of the week, Rise Of The Guardians and Life Of Pi (both are in 3D) did modestly at forth and fifth places.

First Look At Hansel And Gretel - Witch Hunters Poster

Fans of Fairy Tales from Brother Grimm be alerted! In Jan 2013 (25th Jan 2013 to be exact), the adaptation of the popular fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel, will be released in 3D with the movie title of Hansel and Gretel - Witch Hunters. With such a title, a darker version is expected but basing on the trailer, humour seems to be part of the recipe too! ;-)

Jeremy Renner (aka the Hawkeye) reprises the role of Hansel and Gemma Arterton (Bond Girl from Quantum Of Solace [007]) reprises the role of Gretel. One thing worth highlighting is that the evil force is lead by Muriel (reprised by Famke Jansen aka Jean Grey from X-Men).

The Hobbit - After Gollum, Here Comes Gandalf At Embassy Theater

the hobbit an unexpected journey, giant statue of gandalf
As part of the marketing effort, just last month, a giant statue of Gollum was set up in the Wellington Airport, New Zealand. Now, here come the statue of another key character of The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey: Gandalf.

Instead of airport, the giant statue of Gandalf was setup at The Embassy Theatre in downtown Wellington. As depicted in the trailer, it is a scene whereby Gandalf is standing in front of Bilbo's home. The reason for the statue is that the theatre will be hosting the world premiere of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on November 28th there!

ah boys to men, jack neo
Here are the TOP 5 Movies of Singapore and Malaysia for the week ending 11st Nov 2012 (Sun).

SPECIAL NOTE : What a surprise! The Singapore local new release "From Ah Boys To Men" (Mandarin) toppled Skyfall to become Top movie of the week. Actually, it might not be exceptionally surprising after all as the director of the movie, Jack Neo is a well known and popular director here with a few millions dollars projects released under his directorship.  Besides, it is a movie about the army life, which the locals can relate to it very well. In Malaysia, Skyfall remains at the top place on its second week.

Skyfall - The Amazing Opening Credits [Video]

If you have already watched the 23rd James Bond movie, SKYFALL, I am sure you will be awed with the opening credits. In fact, the opening credits has been the tradition of all James Bond movies and it just provide an additional ohm to the entire movie.

What make the opening credits in Skyfall special are:

1. The credit literally start with the FALL of James Bond! However, do take note that this FALL has nothing to do with the movie title, Skyfall as the latter is actually the name of a place in Scotland (where James Bond was born).

2. The theme song, Skyfall is sang by the diva, Adele

Guest Review - Skyfall (IMAX)

james bond, skyfall
It has been a while since the last guest review (on Taken 2), my trusted friend, Ben, is back! Today, he is reviewing the 23rd James Bond movie, Skyfall.

The well loved secret agent, 007 (by Daniel Craig for the third times) broke the franchise' own record being the best opening Bond Movie in US last weekend (US$88.4 mil). Internationally, so far it has gained US$429.6 millions from about 80 markets (excluding US) and it is a matter of time (in day) to surpass Casino Royale (US$431) to become the highest-grossing Bond movie ever overseas.

As at last week, Skyfall has earned $287 millions internationally (and that's excluding the US market), it is a matter of time for it to eclipse the most successful James Bond movi, Casino Royale @ $427 millions (which is also under the helm of Daniel Craig).

Argo (Ben Affleck) held it quite strongly too at the third place, on its fourth weeks in the Box Office.

One of the other new release, The Man With The Iron Fists  (RZA, Russell Crowe) opened weakly at the fourth place. Next week, the highly anticipated 23rd James Bond movie, Skyfall will hit the big screen in US and I am pretty sure that it will be opened with a BANG! Good news for the Star Wars fans! The 7th episode of Star Wars franchise is being committed and announced during the official announcement of LucasFilm being acquired by Disney for a hefty $4.05 billions (in cash and stock). “I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come.”

Weekly Box Office Movies in US (Ending 2012/10/28)

Here are the TOP 5 Movies from US for the week ending 28th Oct 2012 (Sun).

SPECIAL NOTE : What a surprise and rare scenario! Argo (Ben Affleck) claimed the top spot on its third week in the box office. It has received rave review and good words of mouth. So, it has proven once again that great and intrigue story-line goes a long way.

The other new release, Cloud Atlas (Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving etc..) was a disappointment at 3rd place. An ambitious story-telling concept that integrate 6 different stories into one and the characters (from different stories) are intertwined with each other. The best part (or the confusing part) is that the same actors/actresses are playing different characters in the  different stories.

The Hobbit - Giant Gollum Statue At Wellington Airport, New Zealand

If you are going to or already in New Zealand, do pay a visit to Gollum (the key character/creature from The Lord Of The Rings and upcoming prequel, The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey). Recently, a giant Gollum statue has been installed in the Wellington Airport, New Zealand (by WETA).

It looks so freaking real and cool!

Not too sure how long it will stay there but I believed it will be there until the release of the movie in Dec 2012. Thus, if you are a fan of Middle Earth franchise, go experience yourself at the airport and snap, snap, snap (photo)!
