Weekly Box Office Movies in US (Ending 2013/03/10)

Here are the TOP 5 Movies from US for the week ending 10th March 2013 (Sun).

SPECIAL NOTE : As expected, Sam Raimi's prequel to Wizard Of Oz, Oz The Great And Powerful (James Franco, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz) took the box office by storm last week and effortlessly claimed the top spot with a whopping 80.3 millions.

Globally, it has already grossed $150 millions. In terms of ticket sale, it is already the best movie so far. Basing on the promising movie critics and words of mouth, it seems to be able to maintain quite well in the coming week(s).

The other new release, Dead Man Down (Action thriller by Colin Farrell and Noomi Repace) opened meagrely at fourth place.

Interstellar - Your MUST WATCH Sci-Fi in 2014

interstellar, christopher nolan
Inception and the last Batman Trilogy fans listen carefully, the visionary director, Christopher Nolan has bagged his latest Sci-fi project, Intersteller and it will be released on 7th Nov 2014, in IMAX.

It will be jointly distributed by Warner Bros and Paramount. So far, no news on the casts yet but basing on the past history, my guess is probably Christian Bale (aka the Batman), Tom Hardy (Bane in The Dark Knight Rises) or Guy Pearce could be in the project.

The good news is Nolan will write  and direct, based on a script by his brother Jonathan Nolan. Briefly, the movie is about  “ a heroic interstellar voyage to the furthest reaches of our scientific understanding” built out of the theories of theoretical physicist, gravitational physicist and astrophysicist Kip Thorne (source: slashfilm.com).

Star Trek Into Darkness - Latest Teaser Trailer [May 2013]

star trek into darkness new teaser trailer
Coming May 2013, you will be spoiled of choices of blockbuster movies in the theatre near you. Besides the Iron Man 3, the other big budget blockbuster sequel that I am waiting for is Star Trek Into Darkness.

Yesterday, Paramount Pictures has released the new action-packed teaser trailer for J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Into Darkness. Frankly, prior to the reboot of the 2009 Star Trek, I am only a Star Wars fan and now, I am both! ;-)

The new teaser trailer definitely up the ante of my likeness towards Star Trek franchise. Star Trek Into Darkness will be released on 17th May 2013 and the IMAX 3D format will be released 2 days earlier on 15th May 2013.

Short synopsis of Star Trek Into Darkness (source: GeekTyrant):

In the wake of a shocking act of terror from within their own organization, the crew of The Enterprise is called back home to Earth. In defiance of regulations and with a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads his crew on a manhunt to capture an unstoppable force of destruction and bring those responsible to justice. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

The Hunger Game : Catching Fire Character Posters [Nov 2013]

the hunger games catching fire
Almost one year after the wildly successful action movie, The Hunger Games (2012), many of the fans are patiently waiting for the news of the inevitable sequel, The Hunger Games : Catching Fire. It is confirmed that the sequel will be released on 22nd Nov 2013 and in IMAX too. Also, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will reprise their respective roles.

Recently, Lionsgate Films released a series of character posters of The Hunger Games : Catching Fire serving as a reminder to the fans (or fans to be) that the sequel is "Akan Datang" (Malay for coming soon). The portrait style posters seems to be perfect for the tone of the movie. Check out all the 11 character posters below.

Short synopsis of The Hunger Games : Catching Fire (source: GeekTyrant):

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safely after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour" of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever.

Latest Trailer - Iron Man 3 and After Earth

new trailer for iron man 3 and after earthThis week, we are being treated with two awesome trailers. One is for the superhero sequel, Iron Man 3 (Robert Downey Jr) and the other is a fresh Sci-fi from M. Night Shyamalan, After Earth (Will Smith).

I guess there is no need for me to introduce Iron Man franchise any further except that I am looking forward to see how badass will Sir Ben Kingsley be in portraying The Mandarin (the villain). For my earlier coverage of Iron Man 3, click here. It will be released in 2D, 3D and IMAX on 3rd May 2013 (USA).

As for the After Earth, the father-and-son team (Will Smith and Jaden Smith) once again collaborated in the big screen (after the "The Pursuit Of Happyness"). For my earlier coverage of After Earth, click here. It will be released on 7th Jun 2013 in IMAX (USA). The trailer looks cool and it reminded me of another upcoming Sci-fi by Tom Cruise, Oblivion.

jack the giant slayer

SPECIAL NOTE : There are a few new releases this week but as expected, Jack The Giant Slayer (by Nicholas Hoult, the same guy from Warm Body) took the top spot, but with a smaller than expected sales. The other two new release, 21 And Above (comedy by Miles Teller and Justin Choo) and the horror sequel, The Last Exorcism Part 2 took the Third and and Fifth Places respectively.
